Unfortunately, Rondane Backyard Trail ended up being another race to file in the burgeoning 'what could have been' folder. Fell into my usual trap of wanting to run when I could, at a pace which felt comfortable; the problem being of course, that comfortable with fresh legs is usually something quite different from sustainable in the long run. So ended up with 10 (too) good laps, followed by 3 laps of increasing misery as I ran out of energy, and then sleeping in the car as a 'reward' for giving up 11 laps early.

27th of 117 starters is objectively not 'bad', but with only 13 laps, just a long way off my own expectations and what I thought i was good for.
I'll take as a positive that I managed the pace I did for the first 10 laps, which was consistent with my weekend longs runs of 'just' 3 hours. And I've come out of the race with no new injuries, despite one small scare landing on a rock a little wrong later in my run - I might have been the only runner from Romerike Ultraløperklubb who avoided taking a tumble (the terrain was far from technical, although there were plenty of stones on the downhill first half of each lap offering the chance to fall, which I thankfully avoided taking).
So now with 46 days before I next pin on a start number to tackle 100 miles on trails, the long training runs won't be getting any shorter, but hopefully I can push myself to go a little slower and find a successful hydration and nutrition strategy. Although 12 hours on concrete just 2 weeks after that also means I want to keep some (relative) speed in my legs as well.
Perhaps next time I tackle a backyard ultra, I need to try and find someone to crew - if only to be that little voice for me that seems to be missing, to remind me to take it easy.

Men kul løype. Artig å møte nye og kjente løpevenner igjen. Ferien avslutter slik som vi liker de
